Planning & Designing Your Model Railroad

By B. Murphy The layout is the heart of your railroad system. The arrangement of the tracks, switches, crossings, and uncouplers determines what you can do with your trains to make their operation a source of never-ending fascination. You can make the rails curve, go straight ahead, lead into a siding, branch into an alternate route, tunnel through mountains, pass over bridges, circle through an earth cut, or thread through a maze of switches at a terminal or freight yard. Where your train goes and what it does is up to you, and you’re limited only by the space at your disposal. Even if your space is quite small, you can make your train duplicate almost everything that real trains do. Choosing a layout is really a personal matter. No one else can tell you how to arrange your model railway. All that can be done is to show the meaning of various space limitations and to suggest some of the many possibilities that you’ll adapt and combine, according to your own wishes. Never hesitate to try out your ideas to see if they will work, even if you can’t find them in the layout diagrams in any book. Before you are through you’ll without a doubt choose several layouts, discarding or changing one to make another that appeals to you more. And you won’t be satisfied with that one for very long… You’ll invent a new plan or will become more interested in one aspect of railroading than another and change your layout to suit that interest. You may prefer switching operations, running multiple trains, or timetable scheduling and you’ll plan your railroad accordingly. You will add another table, an extension of some kind that increases the potential immensely. The Basic Building Blocks Along with your train set you have at least a circle of track, consisting of twelve curved sections. In S gauge this is forty inches in diameter, so you will need a space at least forty by forty inches. Whether that space is on the floor, on a sheet of plywood or on a tabletop will be up to you. Some train sets also have a few sections of straight track to make an oval, which is really just a lengthened circle. If you have two sections of straight track and put them in your circle at opposite points, you will have an oval forty by fifty inches. Four straight sections, two on each side, will give you an oval forty by sixty. Six straight sections, along with the twelve curved, make the longest oval you can put on a 4′ x 6′ board. Going Beyond the Basics Now, a simple circle or oval doesn’t really imitate a real railroad all that well. After all, a real railroad’s reason for existing is to travel from point-to-point, not simply to go around in circles. Taking a simple model railroad layout and modifying it to be more realistic, while still fitting within the limits of your available space (and budget!) is the key to getting the most enjoyment out of this hobby. By Robert Michael Many of you have probably heard the term “asset management” Before, but you may not have an idea of what it really is. Asset management is a broad term. It can be defined as a process that guides the gaining of assets, along with their use and disposal in order to make the most of the assets and their potential throughout the life of the assets. While doing this, it also manages and maintains any costs and risks associated with the assets. It is not something you can buy, but rather a discipline you must follow in order to maintain your assets. Asset Management can be used for a variety of things. Most use asset management to keep track of their cash or “liquid assets.” Banking institutions are considered a form of asset management (savings accounts, CD’s, mutual funds, money market accounts, etc.) along with investments. Another example of assets: businesses often have a product to sell. These products are considered assets. The right asset management system can be utilized to make the product more readily available, easier to produce, cheaper to ship to customers, etc. Asset Management Resource: Tracking and insuring the product is also a way of asset managagemant. The product is an asset to the business and essential for its survival and for financial stability. So, maintaining and managing this product is of the up most importance. There is another type of asset that many people do not think of when they think of the term “asset management.” This asset has to do with public and shared assets such as: the building and maintaining of streets, highways, water treatment facilities, sewage, electricity, natural gas, clean air, etc. All of these are assets that everyone on this earth needs. Usually, your city or local government uses asset management to maintain the cost of these assets. They also use it to produce some of these assets more effectively and in a more cost efficient manner. Natural resources such as: water, electricity, and natural gas are managed so that they can be renewed constantly and thus available inexpensively. Asset Management Resource: There are many different means of asset management. It often depends on what type of asset is involved. There are companies and software products available to assist in asset management. Whatever method you choose, there are many similar things that your asset manager system should entail: 1. Optimize asset use and manage all maintenance efforts involved by making assets as accurate, reliable, and efficient as possible. 2. Reducing the demand for new assets and thus save money by using demand management techniques and maintaining current assets. 3. Uses a form of asset tracking: knowing where the asset is at all times, how much the asset is worth, and how much the asset cost you to begin with. It should also incorporate this throughout the entire life of the asset. 4. Always tries to achieve greater value for money through evaluating the asset options: the cost of maintaining, producing, the use of it, etc. 5. Always provides a report on the value of the assets, along with any costs involved in maintaining the assets. Hopefully you now have a better understanding of the many forms of asset management. There are so many different things that can be defined as assets, thus there are so many different means of asset management. By Rotich Wilson Liberation theology can simply be defined as the theological endeavor which sees God’s continuing work in the world from the view point of the oppressed and understands that work to involve the reconstruction of persons and societies according to the mold of the master (Smith,1992). There are three major liberation theologies. The Latin American Liberation Theology, the African American liberation theology and the African liberation theology. These three liberation theologies do seek freedom from political, economic and social bondages. Gustavo Gutierrez, who was born in 1928 in Lima, Peru and studied in San Marcos University in Lima and the University of Lyons in France, played a major formative role in the formulation of liberation theology. He studied both medicine and Karl Marx philosophy before shifting to theology in his undergraduate studies. He graduated in 1959 with a doctoral degree from the University of Lyons in France. According to Gustavo Gutierrez and his followers, sin, is the negation of ones fellow human being as a brother. Sin is regarded as a social, historical fact, the absence of fellowship and love in relationship with God and with other persons, and therefore, an interior, personal fracture. Sin is fundamental alienation, the root of instances of injustice and oppression. Sin demands a radical liberation, which in turn necessarily implies a political liberation. Most of the liberation theologians do consider the act of enslaving a person to be the most heinous sin which needs powerful political liberation. But truly speaking, from the biblical point of view, what is the benefit of such liberation? Will it earn a person eternal life? Certainly not. It is very important and eternally beneficial for a person to be liberated from the bondage of sin. When Christ was confronted by the Jews who thought that they needed no liberation because they were free from political, social and economic bondages, Christ told them. I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the son sets you free, you will be free indeed (John 8:34-36). Because spiritual liberation from the bondage of sin takes precedence in Christendom, what is the biblical message to a slave and a master who gets saved? Should the slave fight forcefully for liberation? Should the master free all his slaves the moment he gets saved? The apostle Paul has the following to say: All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that Gods name and our teaching may not be slandered. Those who have believing masters are not to show less respect for them because they are brothers. Instead they are to serve them even better, because those who benefit from their service are believers and dear to them (I Timothy6:1-2). The apostle Paul urges the slaves to honor their masters and to continue serving them; he also instructs the saved masters to consider their slaves to be their brothers in Christ. To illustrate this in a more practical way, the Apostle Paul wrote a letter to Philemon, a saved master, to accept Onesimus who was Philemons run-away slave. He wrote to him to accept Onesimus no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother. He is very dear to me but even dearer to you, both as a man and as a brother in the lord (Philemon vv16) Pauls key message is for masters to consider their slaves as their fellow brothers, to treat them in a very humane way and to respect their human rights. Pauline theology tends towards maintaining economic stratification while eradicating social stratification. The apostle Paul, the inspired writer of half of the New Testament teaches that Christianity seeks to bring all human beings of all races, colors and shapes to a level social and spiritual ground while each may maintain their different economic echelons. The following paragraphs give a clear outline of the trends and how they will impact buying decisions. Generational culture The love affair between Generation Y, those born between 1977 and 2000, and the Internet will continue to grow. Online sites such as My Space and You Tube are becoming mega-outlets having an impact on entertainment, opinion, and marketing. More than 80% of this generation is comfortable making online purchases. Television networks have found this is an effective way to promote programming while gaining additional advertising revenue. There continues to be significant differences between generations for gathering news. Generations X and Y are beginning to use the online sites of local newspapers as opposed to the printed versions favored by Builders, those born before 1944. Baby Boomers, born between 1943 and 1964, use both Internet and print medias on a consistent basis. Printed phone books and home mailers continue to be a respectable marketing tool for the Builders, however this method is rapidly dwindling in popularity among Generations X and Y. The exception for the younger generations is the magazine type home mailers which can be quickly flipped through. Economic culture The affluent culture has also discovered the Internet. It is quickly replacing the print media as a source of news for those with household incomes of $75,000 and higher. One recent study shows that 94.3% of the affluent culture access the Internet on a regular basis. Over 48% are considered heavy users of the Internet. Marketing studies now reveal that the affluent culture is much more likely to discuss purchase options with their friends prior to actually buying new products. There seems to be a feeling of elitism by sharing outstanding companies, products, and salespersons with their friends. Oddly, among these high earners much value is placed upon the ability to be lined up with an extraordinary deal. At lower end of the economic scale, it is more likely that a bad shopping experience will be relayed to friends and family. The group appreciates fair prices and appreciation for their business more than other groups. Although per capita buying power is less, recognizing this trend for free positive word-of-mouth advertising can be a strong competitive advantage for businesses, resulting in a dedicated customer base. Ethnic culture The dominance of white Europeans continues to decline throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. In the United States and Canada, white Europeans will drop below 50% of the population within the next decade. The most immediate trend in the United States is the growth of the Asian and Hispanic population. In 2005, Hispanic buying power became the largest minority market in the United States. Hispanics account for 10 to 15% of the available commerce dollars in every region of the country. The growth of Asian Americans is double digit, from a low end of 19% in the western states to a high of 31% in the southern states. Indo-Americans, a sub demographic of this group, is among the most affluent Americans and buying power in the hundreds of billions of dollars. The buying power of African-Americans also continues steady growth. Ethnic cultural buying power is nearing $1.5 trillion in the United States and is proportionately significant in Canada. This provides an excellent vehicle for growth at businesses that intelligently pursue these customers. The continued and growing acceptance of cultures in the United States and Canada has opened up a marketplace for foreign heritage products. Manufacturers and distributors outside of North America now find a growing marketplace for their products with the Internet taking shape as a strong marketing tool. Gender culture The male dominance of Internet purchases is disappearing as women are buying more in cyberspace. This trend will continue in 2007 as females will account for more than 50% of Internet purchases. Particularly strong growth will be among post-college and young married woman between the ages of 24 and 36. This creates an opportunity for companies that previously bypassed the Internet to revisit their strategy. Single women are expected to make up a larger percentage of the home buying market during 2007. This will open up opportunities for any products or services that lend themselves to this demographic. Some creativity will be necessary to use the right media to reach them. Online culture Online users seem to be creating their own culture, especially relative to commerce. This can be seen into emerging trends. First, online buyers want a quick and easy shopping experience. This includes the ability to search for a specific product, have ease comparing it to similar products, and being able to check out quickly. Having a restriction against hitting the back button during a part of the online purchase is a detriment among the online culture. Second, people are looking for easy solutions. Rather than buying software to teach them how to build your own website, they would prefer online wizards to walk them through the process. In many cases they will gladly pay to have an initial website built for them that allows for quick and easy modifications on their own. Watch for an increased acceptance of online phone calls. Internet giant eBay has added a link to Skype for their merchants. Skype offers free phone calls throughout the world using the microphone located on most PCs. Skype already has a large presence in South America and Europe and has become a part of eBay. By adding the Skype link, merchants are allowing potential customers throughout the world to call them and discuss the item at no charge. The millions of people using eBay will quickly learn the advantages to Skype, potentially moving it into a mainstream form of communication across North America. Summary The impact of free trade agreements and the Internet are two of the largest changes ever to impact the business world. The dust is finally settling on the changes resulting from these two global events. Consequently we are seeing extremely defined and reliable trends in the cultures listed here. Creative businesses and individuals will be able to take these trends and turn them into successful niche products, marketing, or business strategies. Finding Affordable Transcription for Research Interviews

By Anne Hickley If youve conducted some research including one-to-one interviews, and then realised how much work is involved in transcribing them, youll probably be looking for an affordable transcription service. There are many transcription services available but sometimes an affordable transcription service can seem hard to find. Transcription is not cheap, because it is a lot more involved than copy typing, but that doesnt mean you cant find affordable transcription, and whats more, by providing good quality recordings you can make the transcription more affordable, as it will take less time to complete. You could do the transcription yourself, but if you are not a fast touch-typist and do not have specialist transcription equipment then it will take you a very long time. I have had clients come to me saying they started the work themselves and it was taking them 20 hours to produce a transcript of a 1-hour recording. Thats why they ended up using a transcription service! The most important thing to remember is that its just not possible to type as fast as you speak. Even an experienced transcriptionist will be able to average four times as long for a good, clear one-to-one interview so an hour of recording will take an average of four hours to transcribe. ( Industry standards obtained from the Industry Production Standards Guide (I998), published by OBC, Columbus, OH, USA) Transcriptionists also have to make sense of whats being said, punctuate the speech correctly and use the right homophones (words like there/their/theyre that sound the same but are spelt differently.) So how can you make sure that your transcript is clear, in order to get an affordable transcription price? Basically, the easier you make the transcription for the transcriptionist, the more likely they are to be able to give you an affordable transcription quote. First of all, use the best transcription equipment you can afford, and make sure its fit for purpose. This means that for interviews you should have a recorded with an external microphone rather than one built into the recorder, which is only designed to pick up one voice dictating. For focus groups you should have several microphones so that all participants are close to a mike, and for conferences the speakers should have good microphones and there should also be people in the audience with roving microphones to take around to any audience members wanting to ask a question. More and more transcriptionists are only taking on digital work now, rather than tapes, so to give yourself the broadest base to chose from you might want to consider using a digital recording method. These are also usually better quality. Next, you should prepare well before each interview. Make sure that, if at all possible you have arranged a quiet meeting room, as background noise will dramatically increase the time taken to transcribe the recording, as the transcriptionist may have to listen to sections several times in order to capture the interview speech. It is helpful to spell out your interviewees name at the beginning of the tape, before starting the interview, and speak out any information you would like on the transcript header e.g. the date, the job title of your interviewee etc. During the interview, unless you need to interrupt in order to take back control of the interview, try not to speak over your interviewee. Often in a normal conversation we say yeah, yeah, yeah or right or OK more to indicate were listening than for any other reason. Every time you say that you are likely to be obscuring a much more important word or group of words spoken by your interviewee. After the interview, it is enormously helpful if you can include a list of key words for the transcriptionist. Although were happy to go on a Google hunt, searching the internet to find out how to spell technical terms, names of drugs, names of organisations etc., if you can provide this info in advance it certainly saves time, and saving time saves you money, again reaching toward that goal of an affordable transcription price. Technical work will always be more expensive than non-technical, but providing a crib sheet of key words should reduce the cost. Most transcriptionists work in a standard format, whether that be tabular, tabbed, interviews shown as initials or full names etc. Again most are happy to work to your specifications, but the standard format might well be cheaper, so think carefully about whether you need something different or not. Find out what the standard format is in advance if it concerns you, and you may be able to adapt it to your needs. If, for instance, its essential that you have speakers in different fonts or different colours, this will add to the price. It might be more cost-effective for you to put this in when the basic transcript is returned to you! Finally, give some serious thought to whether or not you need a verbatim transcription. Verbatim transcription includes every repeated word, every um and erm, all those filler phrases like you know and know what I mean that may be repeated a hundred times in one interview, and can also include pauses, coughs, throat clearing etc. if required. Needless to say if this takes longer. If the transcriptionist can filter out all this stuff the transcript is quicker. In my company the cheapest level is what we call intelligent verbatim which cuts out all these fillers but leaves the rest exactly as its spoken. Different transcriptionists work this differently though, so always check when youre phoning for your quote. Here are some brief examples. Somewhat more expensive is edited, which corrects the grammar and any mispronounced words as well as knocking out all the fillers. Verbatim: Erm well, I dunno really, know what I mean? I mean, you know, when I asked them what Marys, er, um, condish, condit, condition was, they said like erm Im afraid we cant, erm, tell you that, Mrs. Smith, cause you aint a relative. Intelligent Verbatim: Well, I dunno really. I mean when I asked them what Marys condition was they said Im afraid we cant tell you that, Mrs Smith, cause you aint a relative. Edited: Well I dont know really. I mean when I asked them what Marys condition was they said Im afraid we cant tell you that, Mrs Smith, because you are not a relative. You can see that a whole extra line of typing is required for the verbatim work in just those few short sentences. There are occasions when verbatim is required depending on your topic it might be required for legal reasons, or you might be studying the language. But if you really dont need it, dont end up paying for it! There are many excellent reasons for interviewing groups of people, but dont do this in order to try to reduce the transcription cost! It takes much longer to transcribe a group of more than two or three people (including the moderator/interviewer) because of the time taken to distinguish the different voices and the fact that people will inevitably talk over each other, especially when they get excited, enthusiastic, impassioned or angry. And finally, a note of caution: remember that the cheapest transcription quote might not be the most affordable one in the end. There is an oft-quoted phrase: if you pay peanuts you get monkeys. Will it really be cost-effective to send your hard-won interviews to the cheapest service if what comes back is gobbledygook and you have to go through the whole thing correcting every other word? The bin liners are just the right size to cover the wall from floor to ceiling. Stick the bin liners all around the walls to black out. Cut the bin liner into strips at door opening. Decorate with pumpkin shapes and fake spiders webs or draw a spiders web with a silver marker or tipex pen. It’s amazing how effective it is. Ghost and GhoulsTurn your old cereal boxes into ghosts and ghouls. Cut down the length of a cereal box and trim into a rectangle shape. Form a cylinder shape with the plain side on the outside. Draw a ghostly face on the cylinder. Cut the top off a white bin liner or white plastic bag and trim to a rectangular shape. Cut strips into the plastic leaving at least 5cm at the top.
